The Story Behind the Legend

In 1955, musician Howard Reed Jr. made history when he walked into McCord Music Company in Dallas, Texas, and requested a black Stratocaster instead of the usual 2-Color Sunburst. This unique order marked the creation of one of the earliest known custom-color Stratocasters, launching a tradition that continues to this day.

Reed joined Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps in 1958, making this custom Strat his primary guitar. Its iconic sound echoed across Texas, notably on the Big D Jamboree, a radio program broadcast by the local CBS affiliate.

Reed personalized the guitar by adding his initials with stick-on letters to the upper bout—a charming hallmark among Texas guitarists. After his passing in 1981, this historic instrument was displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from 1998 to 2013 and now resides in a private collection.

With this meticulously recreated Masterbuilt Stratocaster, you’re not just owning a guitar—you’re holding a piece of musical history.
